Installing StuffIt on OS 8.1

Hey everyone, I have a PowerBook 1400cs without internet access but with a CD-ROM drive.

I want to install some old games in SIT format, but I don't have StuffIt on the powerbook. I've tried downloading the stuffit HQX file onto my PC, then burning it to a CD, but it won't open on the powerbook (sees it as a document).

Can anybody suggest a way to get Stuffit onto my mac? Thanks!!

Hi, eltakko -

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.

The latest version of Stuffit Expander that you can use is probably 5.5; I believe versions 6.0 and later require a version of CarbonLib which won't work in OS 8.1.

You can find such a version of Stuffit Expander in uncompressed form on any OS 9 Install CD, OS 9.1 or earlier - you need not boot to the CD, just insert it, locate the program and copy it from the CD to the hard drive.

You'll find it in the Aladdin Software folder on the CD - on OS 9.0 CDs, that folder is in the Internet folder in Software Installers; on OS 9.0.4 and 9.1 CDs, the Aladdin folder is 'loose' in the Software Installers folder.

I suspect there is also a copy on all OS 8.x Install CDs, but I don't have one to examine - if you have such, dig into it and look for it.
