If it's been a while since the last time you restarted your Mac, you should do that first.
If your startup disk is getting too close to being full, that can affect performance of the overall OS and apps. The OS and apps write temporary files to the free space of your startup disk. If the free space gets too low (or fragmented into tiny bits), that can affect performance. You can check by selecting Get Info on your startup disk (usually called "Macintosh HD") and looking at Available.
i have restarted my imac and have gone to the HD but cannot find "available" in the get info..
In the Get Info window (select "Macintosh HD" on Desktop or in Finder window sidebar and then File -> Get Info from menu bar), in the General section, it should show Capacity and Available.
You can also run Disk Utility and select "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar. At the bottom of the window, it should show Capacity and Available.
thanks Kenichi.. I went to the disk utility and right out of the box it tells me that I have a disk problem that cannot be repaired.. was able to get a appointment with the Apple store and am off to see them.. by the way, you don't have a sister who works for LabCorp in Irvine do you..?
It's a fairly common Japanese name... Like "Smith" 🙂
If you have a way to do it, like an external drive (or even a large USB flash drive), you should back up at least your user data.
I just did a backup this past week so I am reality save.. does that mean you don't have a sister/relative who waork in Irvine..?
sounded like an idiot.. sorry for the miss spells..
I don't know of any relative in all of SoCal. 🙂
Thanks for your help.. Without that hint to look at Disk Utility I would probably not have been aware of the problem.. Apple qenius appoint at 315pm indicated a hard drive going south.. They said that it likely was the reason for Adobe Elements and others acting up as well.. Lot more umbrellas these days.. Thanks again
Glad you (and the Genius Bar tech) found the problem, although my suggestion to run Disk Utility for a completely different reason... 🙂
