Airplay Mirroring on MacBook Pro mid09

I have checked and my mid 2009 2.8gz Core2Duo MacBook Pro will run Mountain Lion. Can anyone tell me if there might be any issues using the Airplay Mirroring feature of Mountain Lion when it's running on my MacBook Pro? i would think if Apple ok'd the system, it should work, but I don't know of any special requirements of Airplay Mirroring

MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2009), Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Based on what I found here: http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

it will not work:

AirPlay Mirroring

Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:

  • iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

I have a Mid 2010 iMac and I'm out of luck. We will know more tomorrow.

If you have Mid-2009 Macbook Pro.. which is not old at all but ofcourse Apple wants you to buy/upgrade there Hardware after each 6 months ... anything older then 6 months they convinentially consider "not compatable" I am thinking of permanently connecting my bank account with there server so they can just take away whatever they want and give me a machine that promises to be compatable with there software for atleast few years. I hope i am not asking for a lot.

Anyways whoever is out of luck and wants the air-mirroring on there So called "OLD" machine.. checkout "Air Parrot" http://airparrot.com

All d best guys.

I agree!! I have their 3rd generation of Apple TV and their new IOS mountain lion that I just bought yesterday. I wanted to mirror my computer screen in order to play the videos from VLC on my HDTV but I have just learn that my Macbook Pro was built in mid 2009 so Airplay works only via iTunes. I tried a Video with Airparrot but the timing *****. Then I tried a video in MP4 and I airplay it from iTunes and it worked perfectly! My *** that older computer cannot airplay. ALL I NEED TO DO NOW IN ORDER TO MAKE IT WORKS PERFECTLY IS TO BUY A NEW COMPUTER!

Or as I m not that stupid, I m just going to convert Videos in MP4 in order to airplay videos on my HDTV because iTunes does not support AVI files. Thank you apple for your unperfect service! Is it so hard to do all that programming in order to make it work? Dont we pay enough premium to have perfect product? NO, Apple want us to buy all their new products!

Does somebody has an idea to Airplay AVI files except using Airparrot?

Beamer works pretty well. I like it. It cost $15 though. You just drag and drop most video files onto Beamer and it will start streaming. All controls are handled on the ATV from there. You can even minimize it and continue working on your Mac (which is better than AirParrot or AirPlay Mirroring).

Only thing that still ***** is that it won't do web content like Hulu you would need something like AirParrot or AirPlay Mirroring to stream.

I haven't been very impressed with AirParrot and never use it because of the lag and audio problems you describe. But Beamer is a solid app.

Since we all probably updated to OSx Mavericks today I just wanted to note that not being able to airplay >>mirror<< on my mid 2009 macbook is silly. If I can airplay from iTunes to my TV (via my apple TV) then why can't I airplay mirror my display?

There must be a good reason why Apple refuses to let older machines join the fun but there is a solution. Download AirParrot and it will let you mirror or extend your desktop.

Now the question is, why is it not possible through native software but acheivable via third party app? Silly Apple.

I know it's late, but here it goes...

Because to mirror your Mac's screen you need a lot of processing power to encode the image in real time and send it through. When streaming a file with iTunes, there is no processing in your Mac whatsoever. It's just a continuous stream of the file through the network. The Apple TV then decodes it and presents it to you.

And just an informed guess... A mid 2009 MBP could probably handle it, but if it's not capable enough of providing a perfect and smooth experience at all times, I don't think Apple would even consider doing it... Also, supporting older hardware takes a lot of development effort with very little return.
