I have recently restored my iPhone 4S and backed up to a older date. after that I toggled iMessage off and on. reset all settings but still my iMessage is verifying a old phone no which i do not use. Finally it shows error. I've tried all tips but failed

Check Settings>Phone>My Number to be sure it is correct. If not, change it.
Same problem here. I'm in Finland. Apparently I've sent 25 activation sms messages so far. Gonna get expensive to get this working!
iMessage and FaceTime used to work via phone number but after changing AppleID password it uses only my AppleID email.
Talked to Apple support execuctive.. Suggested me to use a MicroSim instead of a manual cut sim.. problem will be solved then.. let's see..
Migrated to a micro sim yesterday.. problem of imessage error in phone number activation still exists. BIGGEST SHOCK is my phone has sent 237 silent international sms to uk number 0044.... during last bill cycle costing 1287.00. this month also I've already tried almost 100 times to activate iMessage on my phone number. But my phone is busy varifying my old vodafone number that was collected during a back up after the factory restore process in iTUNES. GOD SAVE ME....
I've been using micro sim all the time and I've tried pretty much all the tricks that people have posted. No luck so far.
This morning I inserted my old Vodafone sim and iMessage verified immediately. But if i use my present Airtel sim the verification becomes unsuccessful. Finally I reset my phone and didn't backed up from old backup.lost all SMS and camera roll photos. Surprise surprise. Now my iMessage even doesn't show any phone number field. It only shows email field. Apple BAD NEWS.
I've just had the same problem on my iPhone 5. I got around it by going to Settings - Messages, switching iMessage off, then switching iMessage back on. My correct phone number then appeared in Send & Receive.
