iTunes has stopped working - windows 7

Honestly I am about to go insane. For the past two days I have been trying to open iTunes on my laptop, which is running on windows 7, and each time it opens almost immediately a window pops up saying iTunes has stopped working and then it closes. I recently updated to 10.6.3 but had no problems at first. I have tried many different things, from uninstalling and reinstalling both iTunes and QuickTime multiple times, to restoring iTunes to a previous version, to rolling back my computer, to numerous troubleshooting steps from apple. I have no idea where to go from here so help would be greatly appreciated.

Try disconnect your computer from the internet and see if you can open iTunes without crash.

If iTunes does open, go to iTunes Menu Edit > Preferences, "Advanced" tab and click the "Reset Cache" button, OK.

Now, use Windows Explorer to delete the contents of Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Download

You may now re-connect your internet then see if you can open iTunes without issues.

Hi there

Have you sorted your problem?

Not sure if this is going to be helpful but for 6 months I have been frustrated just like you. At least you were able to open itunes, I could not open itunes at all.

Anyways, I contacted apple today (which I still cant figure out why only today??), I was told to uninstall and reinstall itunes from my computer. I thought here we go again as I have been doing so for the last 6 months. Anyways t turns out I have not been doing it correctly. When removing itunes I needed to remove all other programmes/components that are related to itunes in the following order;

- iTunes

- Quick Time

- Apple Software Update

- Apple Mobile Device Support

- Bonjour

- Apple Application Support

Then once al that is done you need to double heck on the C:drive that all of the above have been properly removed.

Resatrt computer then re-install.

Well I can tell you I have just done exactly that and iTunes is back again no problems.

So I thought let me share this to others as I undestandhow frustrating it is not to be able to use itunes.

Hpe this helps if you havent already sorted the problem.

This is maddening - I have tried everything in this post, and it's taken my iTunes application from bad to worse. It used to open up when I was wasn't connected to the internet, then would crash when I was connected.

After following all the advice on here, now it opens with just an outline of the box it would normally open up in, and I can't get it to respond at all. I have uninstalled it, re-installed it, uninstalled everything in the last comment of this thread (iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, and Apple Application Support), then re-installed, only to get the same result.

An outline of the box, then a pop-up that says "iTunes has stopped working."

There MUST be a solution to this. I'm paying for all these shows, and I can't reach them.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this still needed.

I'm facing same problem, then I tried to search and found the solution:

- open Quicktime Player

- go to Edit/Preferences/Quicktime Preferences

- in video part, UNCHECK for Enable Direct3D video acceleration.

- click APPLY then OK

- run iTunes as administrator

Hope it will works.

I have iTunes version 11.1.3.8 with Windows 7. When starting iTunes while connected to the internet it would give message "iTunes has stopped working". The only way I had to start iTunes was when disconnected from the internet, Then I could re-connect the PC to the internet and iTunes would work fine during that same session. However, that was a real pain in the neck.

After following the procedure you suggested I was able to solve the problem!! Now iTunes starts correctly with of without the internet being connected. Thank you!

PS.: Although my PC had the download folder but it was already empty.

Hi

I have been getting this error message too.

I open itunes and after a minute or so or as soon as I try to sync my phone or go to my playlists for example I geta pop up window that tells me there's an error and it is closing down.

I have read lots of ways to solve this on various threads on the internet but what worked for me was to uninstall Itunes, uninstall Quick time and then reinstall itunes. I will probably need quick time at a later date but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. So far itunes hasn't closed as soon as it opened as it has been doing.

I know this is a bit of an old post but....

I had this problem this morning, where iTunes crashes on launch when it tries connecting to the iTunes store.

For me, it turns out that the Bonjour service (which, to my understanding, is used to help iTunes 'talk' to other Apple devices that are trying to use the service) had not started properly.

To fix this:

  • Start menu.
  • Type 'services.msc' and press Enter - Click 'Yes' on the Admin pop-up.
  • Now scroll down to the Bonjour service and ensure that under the 'Status' column it says 'Started' (click the 'Name' column header to alphabetise the columns if they are not already).
  • If it doesn't you can either double-click and select the 'Start' button on the window and then click 'OK', or click the service once and select 'Start the service' (on the left hand side).
  • If it does say that the Bonjour service has started, try restarting it by using the same methods as above except for clicking 'Stop' and then 'Start' (if you double-clicked), or by clicking 'Restart the Service' (again, on the left).
  • iTunes should now work.

Hope this helps 🙂

OOh my god where do I begin? It's been about five weeks since I have not been able to get into my iTunes on my computer! The error message pops up every single time I try! I have no problem with it on my iPad mini with retina or my iPhone 5c at all. But I cant even connect my iPad to my computer to open my iTunes! What the heck is going on? Anyone else having similar problems and if so how do you fix this?

Try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

If not try working through TS1717: iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues.

Otherwise for general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
