iPhone 4 doesn't ring, only vibrates, but speakers work.

My iPhone 4 (AT&T) suddenly won't ring when someone calls or I get a text, it only vibrates. The speakers play music fine, and I can have phone conversations and hear/speak to the other person fine. Also, the alarm clock sounds The mute switch doesn't seem jammed or anything, but when I switch it off, it doesn't show the picture of the bell with the line through it while vibrating to let me know its off. Also, the volume buttons get no response when pressed. Any ideas?

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

Worked, mystery, thanks.

Turn AssistiveTouch on, you should see a white circle on upper left corner, tap it to see a pop up of four icons. Tap the device icon, another screen appears where you seen an bell that you can unmute/mute. That fixes mine every time. Don't know why it mutes itself here even though nowhere else on my phone shows the phone to be on mute!

Hope that helps,

More than 3 years after you originally posted this, but Thank You!!! It worked! I have never seen that white circle before. It stays on my screen now, but I moved it to a corner where it's not annoying. I like my 4s phone for it's size, so I'm happy to be able to keep using it. I have an ifusion also.....I think somewhere it and the 4s talk dirty to each other and cause the problem because many of my calls rang over my ifusion (but not all of them to further frustrate me)....and the caller's voice was on the ifusion speaker. Or, my phone would ring but it would not have a text tone....or if I sent a text, the send tone could be heard over the ifusion. Beats me, but thanks again I am hopeful this fix is a keeper!

Ok I've got a couple things you can try:

1. Go to settings-sounds and under ringer and alerts try turning off the "change with buttons" sound, and turning up the volume slider there.

2. If that doesn't work, and your volume buttons aren't responding double click the home button, and slide the page to the right, and turn up the volume slider there.

3. If that doesn't work, try holding the power and home buttons down for about 15sec until the phone turns off, the turn it back on.

If you try a combination of these methods, and after the reboot see if the mute switch works, hopefully you can get it working

Good luck
