Powermac G5 - unable to boot from Cd

Hi, all!

I oicked a Powermac G5 (2003) which had the hard disk removed. So I bought a 160 GB SATA hard drive and put it in. Then I bought the original MAC OS X v 10.2 install Cd's. So far it seemed that this was all I needed to make it run. Unfortunately I can not get it to boot from The CD. All I get is the gray screen with the folder-shape smiley face alternating with the question sign. I tried holding down the C key, also the Cmd+Opt+Shift+Del key combination but, the result was the same. I could load the Open Firmware and I tried to boot the cd using command: Boot cd:, \\:tbxi. This was the response: load-size=258b2 adler32=878490d1

Parsing <CHRP-BOOT>

Bootinfo is not compatible

I also proceded the NVRAM and PRAM reset, but didn't help.

I will apreciate any help or advice. Thanks in advance.

System software Mac OS X v10.2 “Jaguar”

Trouble that is true to a point, just not precise, any 10.2.x is Jaguar, but the 3rd digit can be all important, but this site is a lot more accurate...

Not sure whether there was a Jaguar retail package later than the 10.2.3 that I have, but I note that the create dates on various files predate the G5's introduction by about a year and thus were not so likely to boot a G5.

Thanks guys for all the help and support! If I understand correctly, the mac os x 10.4.11 "tiger" will work for me? Because the 10.2.7 is nowhere to be found for sale.

Thanks

Tiger will work just fine, and in fact be much more desirable than Jaguar. You should be able to find retail install packages for 10.4 and 10.4.6 in the wild, and either should install and then you can update using Software Update (it takes several iterations to complete the updating to full 10.4.11) while connected to the internet.
