double NAT and airport extreme

I have tried several answers on support to get rid of my "no DNS servers" and Double NAT messages to no success. I have Comcast high speed, D-Link modem and airport extreme. When I tried switching to bridge mode as suggested, the modem didn't work. I get internet access intermittently. Is the Doulbe NAT the real issue when I have 6-8 devices on the network?

No. It's actually not an "issue" regardless of the number of devices on your network. It is just telling you that you have at least two routers with NAT enabled, and that, network clients connected to either will be on separate network subnets. The only issue would be if you want clients connected to either router to "see" clients connected to the other.

I have read several of your helpful posts to others who have had the same question. The closest is the person who said that he/she intermittently gets a No DNS Server and Double NAT. I treid your suggestion of switching into Bridge on the AE but my D-Link disconnects from the internet and stays disconnected even after I have restarted it. When I go back to the AE setting of DHCP and NAT it works again but still goes on the frtiz. Streaming is impossible as the internet connection comes and goes. Do you have any other suggestions? Thank you!

Ok, thanks for verifying that for me. I have already downloaded and reviewed the Manual for this modem and I don't see anything unusual or tricky for it to work ... regardless of it is only connected to a single computer or to a router. I did come across a number of articles on the Internet where folks, especially with Comcast using this particular modem, have had sporatic Internet service ... but, if I understood you correctly, this is NOT an issue when you have a single computer connected directly to it ... correct?

If that's the case, for some reason, the modem is NOT recognizing the AirPort to communicate with it properly. It is quite possible that this particular modem is not compatible with the AirPorts. Not all modems are as Apple states in Apple online store for the Extreme. This may just be the issue.

However, before giving up on compatibility, please give the following a go:

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:

  1. Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
  2. Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
  3. Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
  4. Power-up your computer(s).

If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.

  1. Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
  2. While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref:Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
  3. After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
  4. Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
  5. Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.

In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

I have finally had time to follow all your instructions to the letter and still have the same problem. How can I tell if the problem is the router or the modem? Also, I have been getting a ping that my virus protection picks up and I have not gotten this before installing the most recent AE update. Thank you for your continued help.

Here is the Solution for Double Nat Issue on Airport Extreme,

If you are using Xfinity device at you place, then it will work also for that.

Open Airport utility, Then click on your Base Station, Then click on edit, Click on Network Tab, Then change the Router Mode from DHCP and Nat/ DHCP Only to (Off)Bridge Mode and then update settings.

If its asking for DHCP server, then use Google DHCP Server (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)
