Q: New iPad for presentations...MANY questions

Hi all,

I just got the new iPad (32GB, Wi-Fi only) and want to use it to give my keynote presentations. I normally use my macbook pro (~late 2008) running Mac OS X version 10.6.8. I also have Keynote Remote on my iphone 4. And, I have Apple TV (got as gift and haven't used yet).

My ideal situation would be to give the presentation from my iPad and walk around the room. I have done alot of research online about this and I keep getting more confused. I bought AirServer to mirror to my macbook pro and tried to do it last night. It worked but only when my house WiFi was used. There was alittle lag and I assume if I got a VGA adapter to hook directly into my iPad it would be smoother. So this brings me to my questions...

1. I might not have access to a wifi network, is there a way to make a network using my macbook pro or Apple TV  so I can commnicate to my iPad to give the presentation (and still walk around the room)?

2. If I need to hook my iPad directly to the projector with the VGA adapter, I assume I can use my Keynote remote on my iphone, yes? How about without a wifi available?

3. If I use Keynote remote on my iPhone, is there a laser pointer feature, or an app with one that works?

Sorry for all this but I am just alttle numb. I probably don't have the best grasp of how networks work or bluetooth so forgive my ignorance.

Any and all help is much appreciated

Thanks,

Chris

Ok, you have a lot you need addressed, so bare with me.

    1. You can can tether to your iphone with personal hotspot to create a viable wifi for your keynote remote to work.  To tether see this http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4517  In order to create a viable wifi network using your MBP you must have a valid internet connection to share.

    2.  You hook directly up and use keynote remote, but you may use bluetooth.  To use bluetooth with your keynote remote you must have the ipad/iphone already linked.  To link via wireless make sure both devices are on the same wireless network, then go to settings- new keynote link on the remote app. On your ipad open keynote open a presentation to edit, then click the settings/wrench icon and go to advanced-remote- turn it on then enter the code shown on your phone.

    3.  No laser pointer feature, I am not sure if another app would provide this.

Additional note: you can also use your apple TV to mirror your ipads display and to do this your apple tv and ipad must be on the same network.  Follow these instructions http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209

Good luck and I hope I answered your questions.

Thank you very much for the reply! It seems whatever way I choose I need a network connection...right?

Also, if I just hook my iPad to the projector, is there a way to advance the slides without physically being at the iPad?

    Thanks again,

    Chris

You don't always need a network connection.  Once your remote link is established you can use bluetooth to link your iphone remote to your ipad.  You may use your keynote remote app to switch slides and see presenter notes while you're using a cable to connect the ipad to the projector/tv/monitor.

Thanks again for reply. I'm still a little lost. How do I establish remote link and to what? I tried connecting using bluetooth but it doesn't connect. I'm not even sure what bluetooth is?  LOL
