Q: How do I import my iPhoto library to Aperture 3? I can't choose the library when clicking import!

I am new to Aperture 3. I want to transfer my iPhoto library to Aperture 3, and use Aperture as my default photo editor, but when I try to choose the iPhoto library by clicking "import + library" in Aperture, the icon is shaded and I can't click on it. I have also tried the "option" button when starting Aperture, but the iPhoto library icon is shaded there too. It says that the library is an unsupported file system. It is situaded on an external hard drive -due to lack of space on my iMac. What do I do?

Aperture 3, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

    Do the following:

    • Select your iPhoto Library in the Finder,
    • ctrl-click it (or right-click it)
    • and select "Open in" from the pop-up menu.

Then select Aperture in the file chooser dialog.

but the iPhoto library icon is shaded there too. It says that the library is an unsupported file system.

You mean, the iPhoto Library is "on" an unsupported file system? Aperture only supports file systems on locally connected external drives, that are formatted MacOS X extended. How is your external volume formatted? And is it a local volume or a network volume? If you want to open a library with Aperture, you have to move it to a local volume with the correct formatting.

    See:

    1. Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252

Thanks for the reply LeonieDF. Tried it... but it seems like something is wrong with my iPhoto Library though.

The comment I get when trying your version is:

"The library could not be opened because the file system of the library’s volume is unsupported"

When I look at the properties of my iPhoto library, under "Type"  it doesn't say iphoto library, but instead "Pakke" (package in english)

As far as I know, my harddrive was formatted to Mac OS X and it is a local volume. It is a MyBook, and I did have a little trouble getting it to work in the first place, although it has been working sort of ok with iPhoto up til the latest update I did last week, when something went wrong and I couldn't download pictures anymore...

What can I do -I am a total wreck now, don't want to loose all my pictures, but it does seem like they are not stored the right way. How do I change this -or more precisely -how and where do I move them, to get them to be compatible with my camera system and Aperture? My harddrive is probably to small to even store them temporarily.

And... as you may have noticed... I am far from a computer wizz.....

It doesn't sound to me like the drive is formatted as Mac OS X extended.  It sounds to me like it is formatted as FAT32.

To find out the file system on your drive select it in the Finder and press cmd-I (or go to the Finder'd main menu bar and select "File > Get Info". You will see the File system displayed in the "Info" panel like this, if you disclose the triangle at the "General" brick:

What does your disk volume show as format?

You can change the formatting in Disk Utility, but you have to backup your iPhoto Library to another place before you do that, because reformatting will erase the drive.

Disk Utility is located in the Utilities Folder inside the Applications folder on your Macintosh HD. When you launch it, you will see a window like this:

    diskutility.png

Click the "erase" tab and select the volume that you want to reformat in the left pane of the window.

Set the format to "Mac OS Extended (journaled) and click "Erase".

Then move your iPhoto Library back to the volume.
