I have been told by two separate ipod dealers that my Ipod hard drive has crashed and my Ipod is now garbage. Not to sound like a jerk, but I believe them to be under qualified staff and would like a second opinion. Any thoughts?

Actually that is usually the case with the Red X error message.  Either that or the read/write head for the iPod's Hard Disk has become disloged from the platter(s) that made of the hard disk.  Some people have had luck with slapping the iPod again their leg, in turn realigning the read/write head where it should be.
