Q: Hot Spot Wi-Fi

I have an iphone 4 with unlimited downloads on the internet. I am looking at buyng the new ipad. Can I buy the wi-fi only version and use the personal hotspot on the iphone to connect to the internet when no other wi-fi is available, or do I need to buy the wi-fi plus cellular version?

If your iPhone carrier supports the personal hotspot function then you can use that to share its internet connection with the iPad - the iPad will see the phone as a wifi network. So you could just get the wifi-only iPad.

I spoke to them (3) and they were the people that told me about the option so I assume this means they "support" it as you say. I also tried to connect my Kindle and that worked fine. The Apple info on the subject seemed to suggest that I would need the one with cellular as well as wi-fi but clearly with a price tag £100 lower I would prefer to get the wi-fi only version. Many thanks for the prompt response.

You just need the wifi iPad, it will see the iPhone as a wifi network. What you read may have been referring to the new (i.e. 3rd gen) iPad which also now has the personal hotspot function on it, so it can share it's 3G/4G connection with other devices in the same wasy as the iPhone can - but you just need a wifi iPad to use the iPhone's personal hotspot.

Sorry this will sound really thick but is there a difference between the ipad 3 that I am looking to buy and the "3rd generation" that you mention?

It's the same thing. Apple refer to it as the 'new iPad' (I don't what they'll call the next one), but it's also referred to as the '3rd gen iPad' or 'iPad 3' - it's the one that was released in March this year.
