"Character" pop up window opens every few seconds

In 21 years using a Mac, I've never had this problem.

Suddenly, last night, the "Special Characters" window (option + command + T) started popping up on the screen. It appears over every software I have open and slightly delays use of that application.

1. I clicked (option + command + T) in every open application

2. I ran MacKeeper to look for bugs

3. I rebooted the computer 3x

4. I looked for the (.plist) file with 'character' in the name and it does not exist

5. I opened and closed each application to see if I could find the application it's occuring in (still pops up when I have no—zero—applications open)

6. I cleared out the history & cache in Safari

Yes, it's driving me insane! This iMac is my primary work tool and I'm unable to conduct my regular work day while this window continues to pop up.

I feel like I need to clear off the "cache" for the computer and need direction before I start deleting .plists, etc.

Mackeeper was a mistake, remove every vestige of it.

Did you try resetting PRAM?

PRAM RESET

Zap the PRAM

  • Shut down the computer.
  • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  • Turn on the computer.
  • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  • Release the keys.

Hello Alygirlohio

Have you at any time recently had to open Character Viewer, perhaps put it in your menu bar for convenience?

That may have made it more vulnerable to MacKeeper

And if I can add to RRFS's thoughts, MacKeeper is not your friend. Lose it, now.

If you feed it into your search box you will find lots of info on its nefarious nature and just as much on how to get rid of it.

Good luck.

I did not attempt to place the Character Viewer in the menu bar, however, with shortcuts and how quickly I use the keyboard, I may have created this issue myself.

That suggestion does not help me stop the pop-up from occuring.

I appreciate the advice about MacKeeper and will seriously consider removing it. But I ran that application after the pop-up window appeared.

Any other suggestions for stopping the pop-up?

It must really be a nuisance to you ... but reading up about this wretched MacKeeper and getting rid of it has to be your first action. Character Viewer is NOT an application, it is, I believe, merely a part of pages.

Is your Lion program combo updated? If so, you could try running the update again because doing so over the existing set up will cause no problems.

I have removed MacKeeper from my computer and restarted again clearing out the PRAM.

The character pop-up was quiet until I opened Mail and it started up again, appearing and disappearing every few seconds.

I am (also) not able to open the Character window (option + command + T) in any software applications. It just pops up and disappears on it's own and does not obey.

Any (last) suggestions from the field?

But if you read in my first post, I looked for it and my iMac did not have this specific preference.

I did read that, but the folder in which this .plist is located is hidden from the user (unless you take special action), so I thought you might not have been looking in the right place (Home/Library/Preferences, not Library/Preferences).
