Q: I want to hook my macbook pro up to an internet I haven't used before.  It is showing that I am able to connect and the internet has full bars; however I am unable to use the internet.  How can I change the settings so I am able to use the internet?

    Have you tried using the Network Setup Assistant?

     

    From the Mac Help File:

     

    Make sure you have the information you need from your network administrator or your Internet service provider before using Network Setup Assistant. This information might include specific IP addresses or settings for your network, or your account name and password for your Internet account.

     

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, and then click “Assist me.”
    2. Click Assistant and follow the onscreen instructions to set up a network connection.

    Are you getting any errors?  Is it asking for a password?  Please describe in detail all you have attempted to do in order to resolve the issue.

    So basically I am able to choose the network I would like and able to enter the password and the Internet comes up as fine.  When I open an Internet browser it says error not able to connect. When I first purchased my MacBook I had a lot of trouble with the same thing, but a friend of mine came and Made some changes so I was able to connect to my Internet at home.  Anywhere else I go, I am able to connect to the Internet but not able to use it at all.  I am wondering if it is because my computer is set to only use 1 Internet?  I find it strange that it shows me as connected but won't let me actually use the Internet.  I know it is not a problem with the internet itself as I am able to use my iPad as well as others use their MacBooks.

    This is happening on all browsers.  Nothing will load that involves the Internet.

    Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.

     

    Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.

     

    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network

    Unlock the padlock

    Locations:  Automatic

    Highlight Airport

    Click the Assist Me button

    In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.

     

    System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.

    Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.

    No internet connection (wireless)

    Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).

    Delete all extra entries that you find.

    Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."
