Usually when I open the camera on the ipod screen locked you can not see all the photos and now we can and get angry-_-
From your description it appears like you previously unlocked the the screen/iPod and then the iPod went to sleep and you accessed the iPod before the time you set the screen-lock to turn on.
Thus, there is nothing wrong or abnormal.
