How to scan slides and film with Image Capture?

I am trying to use Image Capture with my Epson Scanner 4990. When I open Image Capture I do not have the option to select mode. How do I scan negatives and slides?

What mac computer and operating system are you using? I have a 2008 macbook pro and am running 10.6.8 and I can't get the Transparency / Negative and Positive option with the Epson Perfection 1250 scanner.

Either try the software that came with the scanner, or use the best scanning software out there, VueScan:

I had the same problem. Using Epson Perfection 1650 and Image Capture I was not getting a usable Mode option. I unplugged and restarted everything and to my surprise the Mode options appeared. Transparency / Negative and Positive.
