Q: Crash on waking

I have a new mid-2012 MBP 13 - 2.9GHz/8GB with a 256GB SSD, running OS 10.7.4. When I started off with the supplied version of the OS (10.7.2 or 3?), I could close the cover on the computer to sleep -- or use any other method -- and the computer would wake as expected. Then I updated the software, which rolled me to OS 10.7.4 plus a variety of other updates. Now,  I my MBP 13 cannot sleep and wake without crashing. My screen freezes with a spinning pinwheel. My mouse can move that pinwheel, but all other inputs are not recognized. I searched the support discussions, but found no solutions that work for me. The most promising solution was to do a clean reload of the OS with a Time Machine backup. This is how I know that this behavior is related to the updated software. Any ideas?

Success!!!!! I cloned and installed the OWC Mercury Extreme 240 GB, and everything works as it should. I was able to format the disk and install a recovery partition, too. The OCZ V4 would not permit it. I am sorry that I was seduced by the printed tech specs for that OCZ. This OWC disk is plenty fast. Boot time is consistently 9 sec from button push (before optical drive sound) to login screen. I think that the problem is solved. I will stick with OWC in the future. They understand Macintosh.

    If the firmware updated to the OCZ does not fix it, go with an OWC Mercury Extreme. It works perfectly out of the box, and that hardware change fixed all of my quirky problems. I also had a slow boot-up where many Parallels tasks were being performed before my login window appeared. I could "fix it" (a poor workaround) by doing a PRAM reset after quitting Parallels, but that was not a desirable situation. After changing to the OWC hardware, my boot times are now consitantly under 9 sec, wherther I use Parallels or not. Never have to do a PRAM reset to improve performance ... at least not yet. Been running this new SSD for a couple of weeks now, and I am really glad that I went this route. I would expect that the performance differences between the Vertex 4 and the Mercury Extreme would not be noticable, even though the specs are as stated. Good luck with your approach.

    The 1.5 firmware for the Vertex4 has done the trick. No more crash after waking, and performance is as expected (blazing fast). However, it would appear OCZ released the SSD without doing the proper R&D for Apple compatibility. I'm glad I was not an early adopter --- updating firmware from prior to 1.4 is destructive and erases the entire drive.

     

    However battery life is abysmal --- 4 hours tops. For an SSD, this is crazy; it should be matching if not outperforming the 7 hours Apple gives for the included HDD. The idle power consumption of a V4 is 3x that of a Samsung 830 or Crucial M4. As I am running my MBP as a primary desktop right now I will leave it, but if OCZ doesn't address this in a future firmware update, I will be switching to a Samsung, Crucial or OWC.

    Good to know, glad I returned the OCZ..., I went with crucial over OWC on price. Microcenter was even cheaper than Amazon
