Converting .avi to .mp4 without video loss

I have AppleTV and am wanting to watch the videos from my computer, except they are mostly in .avi format. What is the best way to convert .avi files to .mp4 without losing video quality?

Unlikely to do it unless the avi is using all mp4 codecs and just needs repackaging.

MPEGStreamclip is possible. Try "save as" and see if it works. If not you may be able to get by with just converting one of the components and passing through the other if it is a mp4 variant.

Use Media Info - http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net - to get details of codecs used in multimedia.

Many AVIs use mp3 as an audio codec so that one at least will need converting.

If you end up having to convert, some use Handbrake.

Many modern devices (still cameras that take video etc) do indeed use mp4 wrapped in an AVI container, but the basic point being made is that it isn't possible to suggest any software with any certainty without knowing the compression types used. Indeed there are some AVI formats for which there simply is no software that can convert it, although of course it's unlikely these will crop up very often.

One of the problems with just suggesting any old software is that it may well convert when it's not necessary and end up throwing away information it didn't need to.
