Q: How do I get my Apple TV to 'ask' before joining the network?

Hi,

My Apple TV is currently using up large amounts of my broadband usage simply by being turned on and not through any download usage.

I understand that the best way to restrict this is to get the TV to 'ask' before joining the network. I have gone into Parental Controls and set up the 'ask' switch where possible, but will this stop the TV from accessing the internet, or simply prevent the viewer from watching the film etc without entering the code.

Many thanks.

    Hello:

I am puzzled.....how is the device using bandwidth if it is not downloading anything?

My Apple TV is connected (via wi-fi) to my broadband network right now.  It is on but not downloading anything.  The activity monitor confirms no network activity....

I would think its just to restrict content. Ie viewing shows and movies. But I'm with Barry.

    Hi Barry & Laxman,

That is what I would have thought, but since having the Apple TV my broadband usage has been much higer with no increase in other activity and we have only ever downloaded 1 film. I thought that there was a problem with the BT monitoring, but over 3 days of disconnecting the TV the usage was c0.7G per day, and then when I turned it back on it shot up to 2.8G for 1 day, so I can only think that the Apple TV is downloading someting, trailers perhaps?

If anyone has any ideas, they would be gratefully received.

Ya you got me there bro. I mean to keep refreshing movie lists and the apps on there? When I put mine to sleep the light never turns on(indicating network activity). I also don't have my photo stream on there.

So the deivce was simply on and you weren't accessing anything or was it on standby? Did you use iCloud? You could try a reset. It shouldn't be using any bandwidth if you are not accessing the internet and I can also confirm this.

The light in on even when we are not using the ATV. It was set to go to sleep after 1 hr, which I have now changed to 15 mins, so I will monitor this. It is linked to i-Cloud, but we rarely use that, just for looking at some photos, which we have only done a few times, and the high usage is occuring when we have not done this.

I'm certainly puzzled, unless there could be something wrong with the router, registering some download traffic when it's just connected?

Just wanted to make sure if you were reloading purchases from iCloud. Yes I would monitor when the light is in to see if the device is in use and what is occurring. Also useful to check the router
