I am currently running mac os x version 10.5.8 can I download OS X Mountain Lion directly or do I have to go back and download snow leopard and lion before I can download Mountain lion?

Snow Leopard is a requirement. Mountain Lion will only be offered via the App Store and the App Store requires 10.6.6 (at least).
