Or do you mean Apple's iMessage (the Messages app)?

If the latter, you will need your friends iPhone number or AppleID. Open Messages, tap the New Message icon at the top-right, type your friends phone number or AppleID into the To: box, then type your message into the box at the bottom and tap Send.
