Custom Avatar

Ok, so I must not be as smart as I thought I was. I have achieved level 3, and I still am unable to figure out how to use a custom avatar. How do turn my "picture" into an avatar? Must I be awarded this manually or is it automatic?

Thanks in advance.

If you see an butterfly by 2aLlama then it didn't work. However I see the one I picked, the umbrella. So you told me how to do it! Thank you. My next question is how did you know this and a computer user, me, who started using computers in 1978 in college, with a Master's in Piano performance, and a classical music composer (my present work is a grand scale opera closely following Homer's Iliad using 23 major rôles) could not see this in the instructions on the screen. I'm implying that I'm far from ignorant including computers. My point, to the people who monitor this from Apple, is work is still needed on this sight to make it more Customer friendly. I like Apple and have 7 products of thiers.

I was never a level and I'd always had a custom avatar available to me. At some point Apple changed this so only level 3 (guessing from all the answers here) can add custom avatars. If I ever make level 3, I'll report back but I made the mistake of removing my custom avatar and now I can't get it back.

This is not a friendly thing to do. Apple users enjoy things like this. Apple now forces you to attempt to make level 3 in order to use a custom photo. Is this really the right thing to do here. Are we encouraging or discouraging people to use the Apple Support Community by doing this? Discouraging, obviously. These practices are NOT what Apple was founded upon. Making the experience the best for ALL users is what Apple was founded on. My 2 cents.

{chuckle - no offense inteneded}

That's the problem with "gamification" -- how does Apple "reward" folks with stuff that costs Apple "nothing"

* it is small consolation that the JiveSoftware Community allows custom avatars from the git-go > https://community.jivesoftware.com/welcome = feel free to join up there and learn a lot about how this AppleJiveWare worked before it was "modified to Apple's specifications"

There was a period of time where there was (another) glitch which enabled some level 1 users to make their picture into their avatar. This has now been fixed I believe. The custom avatars are (and have always been) a perk at a later level, so, if you had one, you might have been one of those affected by the glitch.

To clarify... this was a forum glitch that "automatically" made a custom avatar from the user action of posting a Primary Profile Picture, no intentional act was required.

I tested this and also found the same thing that J Bertram found - "... made the mistake of removing my custom avatar and now I can't get it back" - thus proving that the Level 1 user was NOT granted the perquisite of a Level 3.

I quit observing for this behavior long ago, so it may well have been fixed - REALLY important to fix that and not the other stuff that still persists.
