I set up my iCloud account last month and it required me to set up an @me.com email. I am now told that on August 1 - @me.com accounts will no longer work and I need to get an @icloud.com email. Anybody know anything about this?

That is incorrect.
I called Apple Support and the rep told me all of that ... word for word. I asked him 3 times.

Well thank you very much, boys. I guess my AppleCare Support that I paid for isn't quite paying off afterall. I still don't understand why I was forced to create an @me.com email when I can't even use the darn thing for my Apple ID!?
You need a me address to be able to use iCloud mail & notes. If you have a different address as your primary address, you will not be allowed to change your primary address to your me address, but you will be allowed to use either of the addresses to log into any of your accounts.
Okay, Winston. You seem to be on top of it all here, so I'm going to get specific with you in hopes you will be able to set me straight ...
Here are the facts:
a) I have one email which is @charter.net. That email will become extinct soon.
b) I have one @me.com email which I created when I started using icloud.
c) My @charter.net email is my current Apple ID email.
d) I want to change my Apple ID to a different email because as stated above, the @charter.net will die soon.
e) When I try to change my Apple ID to my @me.com email, it does not allow it because it says it is a "Mobile Me" email (even though I have never had a mobile me account).
Here are my questions:
a) Now what?
b) Am I'm forced to get a gmail or yahoo or other non-@me.com email to use for my Apple ID?
It simply does not make sense to me. Can you help me to understand? What am I missing?
If you have not used the existing .me account I suggest creating a new one, logging out of iCloud and then logging back in with the new address.

Yes, unfortunately it is as simple as that.
Please bear with me for a bit longer as I'm confused. First, I have used my .me account. Regardless, you are telling me to create a new iCloud account with a new .me address? How does that solve my problem that my Apple ID will not allow a .me address?
I think you may be getting confused between the suggestions being made by various posters. I didn't suggest that you create a new Apple ID.
You clearly have two Apple IDs at the moment, one of which uses a me address, which you cannot change. The other is a non-me address, which you can change, but the address that you substitute in its place must also be a non-me address.
A question Winston, what stops the OP from not using the existing .me address and substituting another in its place?
I don't follow.
Open a new iCloud account (with a .me address), sign out of the existing account and sign in to the newly created one?
