My MacBook Pro (Retina) Freeze up Randomly

Hello,

I've seen other people having issues with this too, but wanted to post and see when (or if) Apple officially is coming out with a statement and solution, or if anyone has seen one yet..

My Mac freeze up around 10-20 times during a normal work day, in retro perspective I laugh about "Blue Screen of Death" on PC, but this is ridiculous.

It's a hard freeze, so I need to hold the power button to cold start the computer completely.

I tried:

  • Locking down the gfx card, so it doesn't switch.
  • Check heat values...
  • Use only "approved" Apple software's - (not use flash, and only Safari).

Nothing seems to work, and the freezes are completely random...

It freezes cold/hot, independent if I have Intel4000 or Nvidia,

Using Chrome, Safari, or have nothing running at all...

It even freeze as soon as I entered OSX again AFTER a cold restart from a previous freeze. (Like it doesn't even have time to start the softwares).

Seems to be completly random... But one thing is for certain, 20 freezes per day, is starting to get too much..

And I'm concerend about the SSD being hard resetted like that 20 times a day, cutting the power of the data I have, if that is going to corrupt things.. (luckily there is no HDD in there).

Any ideas or clues what can be causing this, or is there a way to troubleshoot, pinpoint what might be wrong here?

I have a late 2013 Macbook 13 in Retina. This was the new maching released in OCtober. IT has been a nightmare. Freezes all the time regardless of software being used or installed on the machine. I play music professionaly and can no longer afford to be embrassed by this machine that goes off all the time! Apple has taken it in 3 times and changed the logic board twice and the top case as well. Still no resolution. The machine crashes and freezes without warning. Really not the kind of quality expected from apple. Furthermore it seems like this is a known issue with the Retinas given the number of such discussions on the apple board. Yet not one of the senior tech support people Ive spoken with seem to admit that it is. They act oblivious to all those articles and message board comments.

Has anyone found a legit reason for this freeze and a way to fix it?

If there was a systemic problem as you describe, this forum would be lit up like Times Square with posts similar to yours.

If you want assistance you will have to provide details regarding your computers, your computing environment, installed programs, error messages if any, exactly what you are doing when the issue appears, etc.

If you just want to complain, go elsewhere where they don't want to help you. We here would like to help with your issue.

So, Bob the Fisherman seems to think that we invent these problems just to be able to rant about Apple. The inconvenient truth is that there is a big problem with MBP's with Retina screens. Replacing your MBP isn't going to solve it, this is a system software problem.

The only way to fix this is to install Windows (or Linux)! I use a Windows VM machine on my MBP, avoid doing any serious work in the OS X and haven't had a freeze since.

May 17, 2014 7:08 AM in response to halcwb

I agree with you. If you want to do serious work and have a rock solid operating system, go with Windows or Linux and a business oriented notebook or desktop from HP, Lenovo, Dell or Fujitsu. I sold my retina MacBook Pro and got a Thinkpad workhorse instead. The Thinkpad doesn't have the shinny design of an Apple product or a great display, but Windows 8 on it is rock solid, even after weeks without reboot and after 8 hours of heavy simulation workloads. The hardware and thermal design of the system is great. The case is solid and doesn't wobble or creak. Even the display opens and closes without a cracking noise. That's so unusual to me coming from a "premium" MacBook Pro with retina display, where all those issues appeared during one year of usage. With all I've been trough, I'll never consider of buying an apple computer again. There where to much hardware and software issues. I won't complain, but I'm seriously fed up with Apple and OSX.

My MBP Retina 15" (late 2012) worked perfectly fine until recently.

For the past three weeks or so, it keeps hard freezing, though, I'd say once every two or three days. It seems to only happen when either Chrome or Safari are open.

I think I updated OS X right before i started having these issues, but I can't remember exactly.

Does anyone know if there is a way to access System logs or something of the kind in order to see what kind of problem the system ran into?

Any help would be much appreciated, this is getting really tedious.

Oh, also, I'm running the latest version of OS X, 10.9.3.

I have a 2006 Mac Book Pro 15' that has been running like a dream up until this latest software update. It started running much slower and then started freezing. My first thought was it was the battery so I removed it and let it sit over night. Turned it on with just the power cable in and has been working fine. Still slower than before though. Bought a new battery put it in and charged it all night long. Turned it on in the morning and boom froze again on me. Took the battery out and it is working just fine again. What can cause this?

Aug 4, 2014 8:47 AM in response to thExplorer

My early Macbook Pro Retina, freezes and reboots, every few days or so as well. The computer freezes, and then it reboots on its own. I removed Chrome, and that didn't seem to resolve anything. I do currently have the Yosemite beta installed, but the problem existed even prior to that.

I'd like to say this normally only happens when I have Safari opened with multiple tabs, but then again this is primarily the state my computer is in any time I'm using it, so that could just be a coincidence. Judging that all these motherboards being swapped didn't resolve this issue, my uneducated guess would be that it's software related, but I'm probably just saying that because I'm out of warranty, and would hate it if it's hardware related.

I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that once the official release of Yosemite goes live, that this issue would be resolved. I do love my computer, but would just as easily hate it, if this is unresolvable, and would require some sort of hardware updating that I'd have to pay out of pocket for.

I'm hoping Apple does recognize the issue, and doesn't pass the buck on it, and I'll just keep checking back here periodically to see if someone found a viable workaround for this annoying problem.

Aug 10, 2014 12:32 PM in response to theidi0t

I started having this problem also, I have a 2013 Ret display with every thing extra I could get, almost $4 g's. But i did find a fix for this, With my mac, it would freeze up 3 or 4 times a day, had to power back up each time. The issue is not the computer at all, I was glad to find that out, what the problem is, is Chrome, there is a conflict with Chrome new update, for some reason apple is not aware of this. You will have to uninstall chrome and transfer all your book marks to safari, I did this and the freezing stopped, I had only one freeze in the last 3 weeks. Try it, It worked for me

PS: Even if your not using Chrome, and using safari, if you have Chrome on your computer, you have to uninstall it off your computer

Aug 31, 2014 6:58 PM in response to kj3407

I deleted Chrome several weeks ago, around the time I read that as a suggestion here. But I still have the same problem. My computer randomly shuts down every few days or so, and typically when I'm using Safari, but that may be more of a coincidence, since i'm always using Safari then an actual cause. So I'm still crossing my fingers for a official Yosemite release, in hopes that it's some software issue with the beta.

I really love this little machine, but if it turns out that this is a hardware issue, and something Apple is unwilling to address, my faith in the quality of Apple products would dwindle a bit.

Hi all,

I've had this freezing problem since updating system to Yosemite. I'd use Safari with 7-8 tabs on and stream on. Had this result below and would be nice to have help on what to do next.

This freeze problem continues 1 year after I originally bought the computer. Apple replaced the machine in June 2014 and the replaced machine now shows all the same issues. They are ignoring me but I hope consumers take note and teach apple that you cannot sell a faulty machine and walk away from the problem. If you are a professional musician forget about getting anything apple made after 2013! Steve's GONE!

Nov 20, 2014 3:12 AM in response to I am that

After trying some of the suggestions on this board, nothing worked:

  • Turning off auto graphics switch
  • Completely uninstall Chrome
  • PRAM reset
  • Boot in safe mode

So I removed all the login items except for the ones I truly cannot live without - Dropbox, Alfred - and so far 2 days without freeze, where I was freezing up at least once per day. Not sure if this will help anyone else, but these are the apps I removed from login items:

  • Keyboard Maestro
  • BetterSnap Tool
  • Fantastical
  • DayOne
  • TimeBar
  • Bartender
  • Evernote
  • Skitch
  • ClamXav
  • Splashtop Streamer

Now I will turn them back on by one to see which are problematic.
