My MacBook Pro (Retina) Freeze up Randomly

Hello,

I've seen other people having issues with this too, but wanted to post and see when (or if) Apple officially is coming out with a statement and solution, or if anyone has seen one yet..

My Mac freeze up around 10-20 times during a normal work day, in retro perspective I laugh about "Blue Screen of Death" on PC, but this is ridiculous.

It's a hard freeze, so I need to hold the power button to cold start the computer completely.

I tried:

  • Locking down the gfx card, so it doesn't switch.
  • Check heat values...
  • Use only "approved" Apple software's - (not use flash, and only Safari).

Nothing seems to work, and the freezes are completely random...

It freezes cold/hot, independent if I have Intel4000 or Nvidia,

Using Chrome, Safari, or have nothing running at all...

It even freeze as soon as I entered OSX again AFTER a cold restart from a previous freeze. (Like it doesn't even have time to start the softwares).

Seems to be completly random... But one thing is for certain, 20 freezes per day, is starting to get too much..

And I'm concerend about the SSD being hard resetted like that 20 times a day, cutting the power of the data I have, if that is going to corrupt things.. (luckily there is no HDD in there).

Any ideas or clues what can be causing this, or is there a way to troubleshoot, pinpoint what might be wrong here?

My 2008 24" iMac running Mountain Lion continues to experience a total screen freeze almost daily. Nothing I've tried has made any difference. Resetting the SMC and NVRAM and running the disk utility to verify permissions has changed nothing. I believe Apple is aware of the problem which is either with defective hardware or defective OSX software. When and if they will do anything to deal with the issue is unknown. BUT APPLE HEAR THIS. IF YOU IGNORE YOUR CUSTOMERS PROBLEMS THEY WILL IGNORE YOU WHEN THEY GO TO PURCHASE THEIR NEXT COMPUTER. I myself will be buying a laptop next year and I wouldn't take bets on what operating system it will have.

I've been having the same problem with my early 2009 MBP.... occasionally before Mountain Lion, but now it's 3-4-5 times a day.. TWICE while reading this thread. Sometimes even the power button/hard reset doesn't work - only yanking out the battery. I'm at my wit's end with this MBP.... looking at durable Windows 7 notebooks. (If such a thing exists.)

MBPr here I updated to 10.8.2 and ended up with a system that freezes 100% of the time. Tried time machine but not from recovery so it chewed out the backup hard disk.

Did a reinstall from time machine (not ideal but did not have a USB formatted for install) and internet here is super slow.

I am too afraid to upgrade. Since SL "it just works" has become "maybe it will work" but its got a dozens more bells and whilstels to pump out the latest beta release. What other OS manufacturer does marketing drive the OS to unstability.

I too am starting to look at windows again.

For a new $3200 top end flagship product, I am disappointed. I am already over the fact that I have 12 plus stuck pixels and about half a dozen dead ones, and apple sent me to an authorised service centre (a 5 hr bus ride from where I live there, and 5 hours back) to be advised that because the MBPr had not been released in the country I am travelling in at present they can not service it because apple will not ship a new screen here. So much for worldwide warranty. What really gets me is I told apple I had called the authorised service centre and they said they cant fix before going but they reassued me that it could be. Their solution at my cost I could send it back to Australia at my expense then get it sent back to where I am now or I could fly to another country to get it serviced.

I purchased a top of the line MBPr and I am too afraid to run any updates (once bitten twice shy).

This is has been resolved for me. Somewhere between uninstalling Parallels 7 completely using uninstaller included with their installation dmg and the OSX updates the issue has been resolved. I have been running issue free with dynamic switching enabled for about a month with Mountain Lion on my MBP-R.

Previously I was using gfx cardstatus to work around the issue so I am not entirely certain which app or OSX update was responsible, none the less, I am glad it was fixed.

I think you're experiencing screen burn-in. Screen burn-in occurs whenever you're computer or TV screen doesn't have a screensaver and if you leave it on 3 hours or more without touching it, it'll either cover in pixels which doesn't have a name, or whatever site or TV show you had on last will burn onto the screen frozen for a long period of time, which is called image retention. If it occurs on your computer, it will be temporarily mostly, if it's on your TV screen, it's usually permanet, which is really scary. Both are bad to have, but having it on your TV screen is far worse cause you'll see it every time you walk in the same room as the TV. If it's on your computer screen you could just shut your laptop and you won't see it, unless it's a desktop computer. It gets too scary if the TV screen has image retention. If you watch a news show, ESPN, or a sports game there's black bars running across the bottom of the screen that tell you information based on whatever you're watching. Watching that TV show too long will cause the black bars to run across the bottom of the screen even when you're watching a different TV show, which is called " The black bars", which are the least worst kind of screen burn-in. Also another type of screen burn-in is called a ghost image where whatever site or TV show you had on last will either fade or disappear. Another one is fuzzy bands will bleed down your computer or TV screen, which doesn't have a name. If you play a video game too long, it could freeze on your screen, which is basically the other type of image retention, or the menu/control panel will be at the top of the screen even when you're not playing the game, which doesn't have a name. The worst place to have screen burn-in is a TV screen, especially if you have image retention. The worst type of screen burn-in is image retention, and the least worst is " The black bars". Those are all the types of screen burn-in. If you're laptop is a MacBook Pro or Retina then you're 100% experiencing screen burn-in. MacBook Pro's and Retina's have serious problems with screen burn-in's. MacBook Pros usually have image retention, and Retina's usually have image retention and ghost images. Retina's are worse by a little. Those are the worst screen burn-in computers. The worst screen burn-in TV is Plasma Screen. While they're the most fancy expensive TV's, they cause the most screen burn-in's, especially image retention, which is the worst screen-burn in to have, especially on a TV screen. It's been proved lots of times they're subject to screen burn-in. This could also make Plasma Screens the worst TV. The worst screen burn-in cinema display is the Apple Cinema Display, which is known for image retention and fuzzy bands bleeding down the screen. I know I've said a lot. There's a lot about screen burn-in. If you're computer isn't a MacBook Pro or Retina, then it might not be screen burn-in. I strongly reccommend making sure your laptop doesn't have screen burn-in, cause if it does, it's very serious. I know that even though I never experienced screen burn, cause I know a lot about it even though I've never had it.

Have a great day and I hope you're laptop recovers soon!!!!

Sincerely,

June

Running 10.7.5. Got another freeze after firmware update.

This is my second rMBP since the first one was crashing too much.

I thought the new machine running new OS and firmware update fixed the problem.

It's still the same somewhat unstable machine that you have to fear something might go wrong everytime you install something or update something.

Just like other people have said loud and clear, this is not the kind of user experience you should get for the flagship model of one of the most valued company. I guess everything just goes downhil again after the big guy is gone. I am very disappointed.

I have not tried the graphic card control app people mentioned here.

For how many people has that solution worked?
