If a sync or update erased your contacts from the iPhone, you can restore them by resyncing with the app where you backed them up to (Address Book, Outlook, Gmail, iCloud or whatever). If this is not your question, please rephrase it.

Make sure you are syncing contacts with the correct program/source that holds your contact information.

Jul 12, 2012 6:45 AM in response to ED3Kby gfromboise, narcisistic avatar with smug response, and only response links are "this solved my question" and "the helped me"? Where's the "stick it in your ear" link? Obviously you don't have to go very far for many users with same if not similar issues. In fact, in last night's condition, my phone showed several contacts on my "Recent" activity list properly detailed but could not be found in the actual "Contacts" listing... ..serious bug between iTunes for PC syncing with iPhone. Recognizing the problem will only allow Apple community to properly address it. I don't suspect you're an ostrich, so pull your head out of its dark place.
Problem was resolved, unexplainably. Through iTunes, i went through restoring iPhone to factory settings (nothing to lose, contacts already gone). After 20mins and completion, not only did I recover my original contacts listings, but i also had newest songs all sync'd which caused the problem originally.
And really, are you helping on these forums? Look at your responses, in general--they all slant on assholeness. Conceited *****.
