Ipad restore Problem ?

My Friends ipad has never been connected to or registered to a computer and they put a password and forgot it and it asked them to connect it to itunes.They came to me (because their computer is broken) and asked me to restore it ( i already have itunes on )
i tried to connect it but it had a passcode, i searched the internet to be able to put it in recovery mode mode and i did it.
however when i try to restore it it takes a while to get the ipad ios update and when it finishes it just stops and does nothing and the only thing that i can press on is the restore button again, and again i tried but it didnt work what should i do ? and when i tried to turn it on ( from the lock button ) it didnt work. what should i do ?
