can I set a connection on a month by month basis on my ipad and not be charged automatically, but only for a month of my choice? I have another wireless account that is used when I'm at home.

Connection to what? Cell data service? If so, that depends entirely on the cell carrier, so you'll need to contact them and ask. Most I'm aware of require you to cancel or they automatically renew each month, but your carrier may differ.
