faint start up chime on G3

Recently when starting, my tangerine iMac G3 has a very faint startup chime. Otherwise, the sound works fine (I'm using it to stream iTunes from Airtunes). Is there any indication here that there may be problems on the way? The G3 is running OS 10.2.8. Thanks.

Hello Meme,
The faint chime would not concern me that much. I am new to X so can't give you exact details....However in 9.2, the first thing I would check is the sound control panel. It is possible that the alert sound volume is turned down. This is differnt than the main volume. I am pretty sure it works the same in X but I am not familliar enough with X to advise.

The main reason I posted was to perhaps offer some comfort that this doesn't sound like a problem in the future. Check in sound prefs. Someone will post with a much more complete answer........mGb.......Jim

I wanted a faint start-up chime so I installed 'Startup Sound Pref Pane'.

Did you and have forgotten?

If not perhaps install it and use it to correct the volume. As OS X has the start-up volume as a seperate preference it just looks like it's become corrupt(?).

Other things to try if settings are incorrect or corrupt is to reset the PRAM, or go in to the Library and trash related preference files. (i.e. com.apple.systemprefs.plist)
