Can you watch rented movies in airplane mode?

Yes.

Actually, I just called AppleCare and they told me that an Internet connection was required. I tried it anyways. Once the rented movie is fully downloaded onto your iPad, it will appear in the Videos app, in the Rentals section. From there, even if you turn the airplane mode on, you should be able to press the play button and watch the movie. Note that I rented the movie in HD format and that I use the iPad 3rd generation.

No it does not work without Internet

You can watch your movie rental without internet connection IF you already finished the download.

When you try to watch it and you are asked to connect to the iTunes store, it menas you weren't able to complete downlaod prior to your flight.

Have a fourth generation ipad. Fully downloaded an HD movie rental from itune store and one for amazon. Both HD. Waited 3 days, put ipad in airplane mode and watched both movies today. Don't need internet connection. Both warned that the rental period began wihen I started them today.

What I found worked for me, (if people still have questions) was I had to purchase the rental on my iPad in SD. I had purchased it first on my MacBook but doing it that way I was only able to watch the movie on my iPad with Wi-Fi. So, purchase on the iPad and you can watch in airplane mode.
