S-video to mini-display-port for VHS to digital

I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro (mid 2010) with the mini-display-port. I want to transfer some VHS tapes to digital media, perhaps using Final Cut Pro X. I was thinking that since the tape player I have has an S-video out port, if I could convert from S-video to mini-display, that would be a good way to go. I have found some adaptors that are advertised for use in the other direction, i.e. to play media from the computer on analog TV's. But I'm not sure if they work in the other direction. I'm also not sure about Final Cut step. Can I capture with it or must I go through another step first?

I have an older Analog-to-Digital/Digital-to-Analog converter box I bought many years ago to do just what you describe under Windows. It has RCA and S-video in as well as firewire in, then it also has the same on the output side. This allows me to take an alaog video signal in through this boix and send it to my computer to capture using my sodftware of choice. WHen I first bought the box, I was using a Dell laptop & Vegas Video (version 4 to date it). Now I am using my MacBook Pro and iMovie (it came free with the OS X 10.7 license).

The devie I bought was from Pinnacle, and I believe they are still in business, but I don't seem to see the firewire devices any more. They do still have plenty of USB ones, but you will relly want the Firewire if you can get it...
