Putting a SSD into the main hard drive bay

Okay i cant find anything that accurately describes this process, i know it had been asked many a time though, so sorry about this.

I have a late 2011 macbook pro, i want to put the SSD (120GB Owc) i just bought into the main hard drive bay and then move the hard drive that came with the laptop to the optical bay. I have the adapter for the hard drive all ready to go.

Is anyone able to tell me the best way to fresh install lion onto the SSD, i already have a copy of lion on dvd that i burnt from the dmg. I also want to install windows 7 on the ssd via parallels. and then use the second hard drive to just store itunes libarary, iPhoto and Pictures etc?

Or is there a better way to do all this?

Thanks if anybody can help

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Install the SSD, Move the HDD to the optical bay. Boot the system from the HDD in the optical bay and use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to Clone from the HDD to the SSD. you are done.

If you want a clean install on the SSD at bootup hold down the Command+r keys to boot to the recovery HD. Open Disk Utility and partition the SSD as one partition with a GUID partition table formatted Mac extended (Journaled). then once that is done exit out of DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X and when asked where to install to select the SSD. Have your system connected to your internet router with an Ethernet cable. WiFi will work but if for any reason the WiFi drops out the you will have to start the install over again from the begining.

Or once the drives are moved and installed boot the system from that DVD you created and do as above, disk Utility, partition/format, then select reinstall Mac OS X and point it to the SSD.

I just move all my documents into a folder on the other drive (Actually I only have one drive installed at this time but I do have it partitioned into 3 partitions). Once that is done remove the original Documents link in the Sidebar and replace it with a link to the new folder you stored you doc in. As to the iTunes and iPhoto libraries you have to copy them onto the other drive then when starting either program hold down the Option key and a dialog will come up where you can select what library to use. Select the copy you made on the other drive. Then you can go back and Delete the original.

I also place a Downloads folder on the other drive and again remove the original Download link from the side bar and replace it with the one from the other drive.

Once they are replaced in the Favorite section of the Finder Sidebar they will become the default locations when you use the Open, Save dialogs and when downoading something from the internet.

First what it the Name of that second drive? If it is still Macintosh HD then you may want to change it to something like Mac HD 1 or 2 to distinguish it from the main SSD.

If you moved your original drive to the optical bay it should already be fomatted Mac Extended.

Then just create folders on that drive with names something like Music MHD1/2 (so you know the folder you created are on the second HDD) and so on. Then copy you music and whatever to those new folders.

Partitions? 4 of them? No NOT partitions, FOLDERS.

In Finder with the Data drive selected in the left hand Sidebar select File, New Folder then type in a name. Or you can press Shift+Command+N.

You remove the normal Music Picutres download documents folders from the Sidebar then just drag and drop the newly created folder on the second drive into that left hand Sidebar area, in the Favorites section. Then they will become the Default locations.

This is really hard to explain as, No Offence, you don't have a lot of knowledge in this area.

Maybe you should google use second drive in OS X for storage of files, or something like that. To get a little more background on how this all works.

Hi. I'm actually doing the same things as Damo34, but for some reason I just can't get iTunes to reliably see the library on the secondary hard drive. Only about 60% of my library appears, and most of those songs have an exclaimation point next to them. I thought I had it working last night, but it seems to have reverted to the way it was previously. Anyone have any idea what this is happening? And how to fix it?

Hi, no offence to Shootist007 but i dont think he understood what i was meaning, with the 4 seperate partions.

I had the same problem as you with itunes not recognising half of my songs, i then saved the "iTunes" folder from the time machine backup to a folder on the second hard drive and then pointed itunes towards that file. It now works perfectly, did you do the same thing or?
