While POP3 wants to copy all the email to your computer, IMAP leaves it on the server at your email provider. So if you move an email from one folder to another, it is done out on their server not just on your computer. You would have to recreate the account as an IMAP account in Mail. If you stay with POP3 you can create a folder called SAVED and move emails to it and they would not be deleted. The advantage of IMAP is that if you access your email with your iPhone or iPad or MBP, the email is all there. Sent emails from the other devices too. With POP3, it is scattered throughout the devices as you compose it, read it, etc. POP3 is designed to be client-based, not server-based.

Here is a shaky video about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogqpF6-SMLE&feature=related

ok i have found out that my imac is on pop3 and a different port, my laptop is set up imap and a different port. also, i went to the server (charter.net) and my missing email is not there. does this make sense to anyone?

on my imac emails remain on there however, if i check email on laptop first they don't all come up on the imac.

this is copied off charters site, if it helps.

If you are accessing your Charter.net Email address from MULTIPLE desktop computers and/or have mobile devices configured to access the same Email address use these settings:

  • Username: username@charter.net (Make sure you enter @charter.net after your username or you will be unable to login)
  • Password: The password you use to login to your email account
  • Server Type: IMAP
  • Incoming Mail server: IMAP.charter.net
  • Port: 143
  • Outgoing Mail Server: SMTP.charter.net
  • Port: 25
  • Web Mail Address: http://www.charter.net

i am totally confused. thank you for your help. it is appreciated.

You have all the information you need to set up an IMAP account. Create a new account first to make sure that it works. Use the exact servers and ports that Charter recommends and you should be in business with a new IMAP account. Once you make sure that it's working, you can delete your POP account.

Call back with any questions.

thank you both. i know you think i am dumb.. i understand what you are saying about the two computers BUT will this stop them from deleting the emails. i am not so concerned about receiving the same emails on both computers as i am the ones being deleted off the mac pro.

i have noticed when i scroll up my emails, three-four weeks have disappesared. is charter.net deleting them or my email software on the mac pro? because it does not delete off the imac/pop3.

thanks for being patient with me. i need to find a way for them NOT to be deleted off the mac pro.

You need to stop accessing the system via 2 different protocols, that's the important thing!

Then set them all up as Imap (archive your existing mail for safekeeping). Once the accounts are Imap you should setup (in Mac Mail) a local folder (under On My Mac). Any mail stored in that folder will be removed from the server, mail stored in the Imap account folders will stay on the server, mail deleted from an Imap folder is deleted from all clients (phones/pc's/macs etc)

no one here thinks you're dumb.

I'm not sue what email client you use to read your emails.

My issue was this. When I check my email (MS Oulook) using my newer macbook, I can't see the same email when I use my old macbook.

I solved this issue by putting a check mark on leave email in server. That way, I can receive them in both my Macbooks.

I use POP mail and not IMAP.

good luck....Hope you sort your email issues out.

thank you bimmer. sometimes with something like this i do feel dumb.

i am using the email software that came on the mac pro and imac. it is the same on each. i just tried to flag an email dated july 6th and i will see if that keeps it from being deleted. the ones that dropped of were dated june 28.

is imap the reason i am losing emails and if so how can i change imap off the mac pro?

thankyou.

You're welcome.....It happens to the best of us.

Try making both computer you have either IMAP or POP3 and see if that sorts out your issue.

If there's a setting to leave the message in your server, then do so you can get it in both computers.

I don't use Mac Mail so I'm not quite sure if the opiton for leaving it in the server is there.

good luck....
