JAVA 10.3.9 update

Does java 10.3.9 update cause display problems, i.e., loss of high definition?

Are you having trouble with your display?

A couple of technical points. 10.3.9 is a Mac Operating System, and Java is a computer language whose main feature is being cross-platform (unix, Mac, Windows) and so is often used to deliver web content to people's different computers.

I think the latest version for OSX 3.9 is Java 1.4.

Having said that, Java should not adversely affect your display. Possibly if you are playing some game that has been written in Java, it may be using a lower screen resolution to what you are normally used to, and that could be what you are seeing.

Yes, I have a brand new Dell multi-platform monitor to replace my old Apple Studio Display that started going out--I thought. This new display worked perfectly about a week and a half and I rebooted the computer only to find that the new display looked as bad as the one we just replaced. After doing a lot of checking, repairing boot blocks, etc., I think it is a software corruption of some kind, so I've already updated the Radeon 9000 pro driver, replaced the latest system update, and zapped the Pram and everything I could think of. the display works fine when the computer is started with an external system CD. It's only two weeks old. It doesn't appear to be a type of video card problem, so I'm looking at possible software issues like Java, Flash, etc. Any suggestions? I don't play games. I use my graphic/layout software on my older Mac G4 mirror doors because I can't afford to buy new stuff for my Macbook laptop. When I start up or reboot, the display is beautiful for about 10 seconds and then zap--it loses high definition and gets weird colors.

If you think it is Java, turn it off and test that theory.

Separately, have Console.app open showing System.log, and see what messages, if any, print when your display goes haywire.

So this is without opening any applications, just boot up, wait about 10 secs and then it goes psychedelic?

It could be a graphics card. I think in that model (PowerMac G4 Mirror) they are replacable. You could give that a try.

Thanks for your reply and advice. I went to the console (never done this before) and saw some error messages. Under console.log, it referred to Firefox with some unknown text and then said "flash player.plugincos(kern) invalid argument. and then something like "media disappeared" I'm having some difficulty reading the small text with the monitor's erratic display, but I went to the system log and starting at what I recognized as monitor and found:

Kernel: Adaptec warning: resetting SCSI Bus

Kernel: BSDroot:diskUS9, major 14 minor, 9

Apple CPU couldn't parse platform function

Jettosing kernel linker

Returning false early, connector or machine incorrect

Then many lines that seemed ok, at least no error or warnings and then...

Reboot in Safe mode ( by holding down the shift key)

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

Doing this will only load apple extensions and is a diagnostic to see whether any third party components are causing a problem, i.e, if you boot into safe mode and the screen still goes bad, then we can discount non-apple software causing the problem.

If the screen performs well in safe mode, then it could well be a software problem.

P.S. I didn;t see anything of note in those bits of logs you posted.
