If a publisher updates an ebook that's already in the iBookstore, will customers who already purchased the ebook automatically get the new version? Is there an update notification that the customer receives alerting them to download the new version?

I recall some widget-based solutions that attempt to deal with custom notifications inside the book itself - google is your friend.

Seeing that there is no mechanism for push notifications for books, that would require the reader to tap on a widget that checks whether a new version is available, presumably by contacting the publisher's website.
That's a far cry from the kind of notification mechanism that is available for apps.
