iTunes will not automatically recognize a CD in the optical reader

My problem is similar, iTunes only recognizes the first CD. After eject and insert another CD iTunes is not longer showing a CD under 'Devices'. I have to quit iTunes and restart iTunes, only after that it will recognize the CD again. Since I'm currently importing my whole CD collection this issue is bugging me. My system details: Dell inspiron 540, Windows 7 64 bit, iTunes version 10.6.3.25

Import speed is always on the low side at about 4x speed this used to be faster in previous iTunes versions. Unchecking the error-correction does not seem to speed it up.

After trying out various ways of opening/closing the CD', to list them:

use the eject icon in Itunes 'Devices', or by pressing the button on the CD-drive,

close the drive by a gentle push to the tray, or by pressing the button on the CD-drive.

It appears that the working combination is to use 'eject icon' in iTunes, and the close button on the drive itself. If I use the gentle push to close the tray then iTunes doesn't recognize the CD. If I don't use the 'eject icon' then it fails as well.

Another remark on the CD reading speed: this afternoon I had some CD's at 10x - 12x whilst other are read slower at 8x or 4x. All CD's were free from scratches and in good condition, it's strange that the import speed varies greatly.

Too bad, the combination above is not a solution that always works.

Same problem here on a Dell Optiplex 780 running Windows 7. It seems to come and go though. There are times when I may get away with importing a dozen CDs in a row, like yesterday afternoon. Then, this AM, it is one and out. This has been going on for some time now. Surprised/disappointed that Apple hasn't seen fit to fix this annoying bug.

For what it may be worth, Bart from Europe's "working combination" worked for me all this afternoon. In any case, the problem I've experienced have been somewhat intermittent (not my favorite kind of problem). I'm hopeful that this workaround will help ongoingly.

I too have this problem but find that if I keep a copy of Windows Explorer open and click on the drive icon of the Audio CD in Explorer, when iTunes has failed to recognise the CD, iTunes will suddenly recognise the CD without having to be restarted.

It's not ideal, having to keep jumping between the iTunes window and the Explorer window but it's quicker than restarting the software.

I hope Apple will fix this bug properly soon, as I have a lot of CDs to import. None of my other applications have any problems detecting when a CD has been inserted.

I THINK I'VE SOLVED THIS:

I had the same problem on a Dell Inspiron Laptop. Itunes imported first CD, but didn't recognize any after that. In reading the other posts, I noticed that most others had Dells as well. Which got me wondering, they probably all have the same pre-installed software..... I noticed that when I put the second cd, in the drive would access, but iTunes did nothing, but Roxio Burn would pop up........That got me to thinking if it somehow it was interrupting iTunes recognizing the CD. So, I removed the Roxio Burn software, restarted the computer, and.....Wala! iTunes automatically recognizes the first, second and every CD after that.

Thanks Bart from Europe, I had a similiar problem & all I had to do was shut down iTunes & restart.

Had problem on my Windows system. The optical drive was set to "A" , changed to "B" still no joy. Changed drive letter to "Z" and it worked. Sounds like a bug in Itunes
