I can't get the speakers on my macbook to work.

The macbook seems to think that the earphones are still in the jack, although they aren't. I've been trying to reset it through the system preferences but nothing seems to work. Also tried inserting a new pair of earphones to reset it, didn't work. Also restarted the computer, which didn't help either. I'm stuck. Any tips?
