Microsoft Office Word crashes using Lion

Has anyone had so many crashes and freezes with Word/Office 2011 with the latest version of Lion running a Macbook Pro (or other Apple devices) that they finally reverted back to Snow Leopard and Office 2008? Every other solution failed and destroyed my ability to work. Apple even ran a three-day diagnostic, found nothing but gave me a new computer and reinstalled Office 2011. The crashes in Word continued for every reason mentioned on this site: when trying to save, trying to cut and paste, trying to add a comment, working in track changes, freezing for no reason, randomly turning off the auto save function so that an afternoon's work is lost, randomly turning off the auto-back function so that there's no document retrieval. Crashing when Power Point is open; crashing when Excel is open; crashing when working in a complex document with multiple comments; crashing in a one page document when trying to move two sentences.

I've worked with both Apple, Microsoft and my personal IT guy and documented all of this. No one has found a fix. Every update was in place and patches.

Conclusion: Office 11/Word and Lion are incompatible. If it was just Office, then users who went back to 2008 and still used Lion wouldn't have experienced the same kind of crashes. There are numerous user reports.

In a final attempt to salvage the expensive investment in the computer (purchased in Nov. 2011) and efforts to make it work, we turned back the clock, scrubbed Lion and Office 11, installed the latest version of Snow Leopard and Office 2008. Please let me know if this has worked for you. Thanks.

I am having the same problem when I cut and paste to Word from the internet (Office 2010). I save all my receipts from internet purchases this way so I don't have to use up paper. Everytime I cut and paste from the internet my computer either completely freezes or I cannot save my document. I just bought my computer. It is brand new and completely updated. If anyone figures this out, please let me know how you fixed the problem.

Dear Petermac87

Being an Apple apologist is not helping. The crashing when a document is being worked on is a real, and serious, issue. I run a publishing company in which there is a requirement for considerable editing using tracked changes in Word. The documents are constantly crashing, costing hundreds of hours of lost time. I am on the point of uninstalling Word and Office 2011 and switching to the open source alternative. Not convenient, but at least reliable.

I don't care whether it is an Apple issue or a Microsoft issue, but it is an issue that is unacceptable to professional users of their software and hardware.

Comment about the possibility of third party software interference, or mismatched operating systems with Office 2011 are red herring arguments. My machine is only two months old, everything freshly installed, and no extraneous programs running. This is purely and simply a malfunctioning product and once again the manufacturer is taking no responsibility.

thanks for this bmcollins,

I totally agree - while no one is saying *all* Office 2011 users have that problem, there is a significant number who do, and it is indeed impossible to work professionally with Office with that level of instability.

dwtapley - thanks for this - I have tried that a while back and it has made no difference.

Further observation shows that word documents will also crash when they are merely opened and then read, i.e., just scrolling up and down in a document that contains track changes or comments (note: any track changes at all! - the overall number does not really make any difference) will eventually lead to word crashing and/or freezing. This is despite the document neither being worked on actively nor being saved or alike.

Not sure if that helps understand the problem, but it was a new discovery to me... and illustrates that despite the fact that the error message I usually get will mention some kind of error with memory, it does notreally relate to memory or 'safing' issues.

Can anyone recommend what type of freeware is most like word and/or can handle word documents.

thanks

Jo

It is relevant because we are referring to a problem running the software on iMacs. If Office shouldn't be run on iMacs then someone at Apple should say so ... and stop supplying!

This is the Office for Mac forum, you have an entirely different product, Office for Windows, and you are running it on Windows

Or did you just type the version wrong and really have Office for Mac, which is it Office 2010 or Office 2011.

There is no widespread problem running Office 2011 on Macs. A small amount of people are having issues with their individual installs. Could be third party conflicts, failure to update or several other things. But it is not widespread and again it is up to Microsoft to get the program THEY make for Mac and profit from to run properly with the newer OS Xs.

bmcollis states that he has Office 2010 for Windows, none of the issues with 2011 on OSX are relevant to 2010 on Windows.
