Q: How can I restore to factory settings without a back up?

I'm trying to restore to factory settings to give my old computer to a friend. I didn't make a back up because I don't need anything on the computer and everything has been erased. Everytime I try to restore to factory settings with the disc, it tells me I need to use a back up and asks to find one which I don't have. This is a 2006 Imac and I'm using the Snow Leopard discs.

The 10.6 disks your using isn't compatible with that Mac, no compatible hardware drivers.

You need this disk here

Follow these install instructions, you need to make sure you have a GUID partition table and a OS X Extended Journaled drive

Yes, we followed that exactly however when you get to the second part for reinstallation, we get an error message that says we cannot install the os without restoring from a backup. We didn't need anything on the system so there is no back up and now there is no disc utility so there is no way past that message.

Can I ask ... how did you pick up the difference between the discs in that thread? And indeed, what disc does the OP have. Hope you don't mind the question from me.

My guess is that is the error message you get when using the wrong disc because I switched from the all gray one to my friend's copy that looks like the one above and NO ERROR! Thanks so much

2006 iMac's didn't come with 10.6, only way to get it on is the 10.6.3 white retail disk.

They were using a 10.6 disk, but a grey/black machine specific version from another Mac which lack the hardware drivers for the OP's Mac, however the TimeMachine restore option is available.
