How to stop iPad from crashing PC/iTunes

Latest version of iTunes (10.6.3.25), works with iPod nano, connect new iPad, both iPad and PC register connection (sounds), PCiTunes briefly shows the device 'iPad', - then jumps to the blue dos screen with fault info, after approx 0.5 sec turns the PC off. So not able to read any fault info!

Did assume a hard disc space problem, had only 2.2GB left and need to sync 4.18GB to iPad. Moved stuff and now have 6.7GB, result- iTunes still crashes.

(Internet transfer will be very slow - apps can take hours - big ones days)

Very grateful for any help as have lovely new iPad with only one album of music.....

(Most music in iTunes from imported CDs)

PC uses XP home windows, hardware 6 year old ACER Aspire 5670.
