I have just bought a 2nd had mac book pro 2006 model 2gb ram and 100gb hdd it is running tiger 10.4.11 I have realized that i need to upgrade this to be able to use the lastest i tunes etc and also to be able to sync my iphone 4. can you upgrade straight from tiger to snow leopard 10.6 or do you need to install leopard 10.5 first.

Backup first
It is always best to have a full bootable backup before you upgrade. If you fail to do this you will be unable to return to this OS if you decide you don't like the new OS. Also there is a slight chance that an install could lose everything on the Mac. The backup must be to an external hard disk. Preferably use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the whole disk.
Erase before the install
Once you have a bootable backup on an external disk it is best to erase the internal disk with the new installer DVD before you install.
During the install
Preferably do not import any data or preferences from earlier OSs during the install process as this can reintroduce bugs.

OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
OS X 10.7.x - Lion
OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive unless you contact Apple. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt check this: Click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. Thanks for the info... i actually haven't loaded anything on to the laptop just yet, no pictures, music, etc it is just running os x 10.4.11 tiger. would you still recommend backing up the hard drive? I have the original install disks for tiger.

No but I do advise that you try using the installer disks as most people find their disks only work in particular Macs.
Another tip:
I always partition hard disks into 2 volumes and put a working OS on each - you can use one OS to repair the other and often get yourself out of trouble.

However, Leopard 10.5 seems to be okay with G4/G5 Power PC for upgrade which would be sufficient to support many apps. Can you confirm that a Leopard 10.5 upgrade can be supported with PowerPC? Second, my research many resources recommend retail install DVDs (upgrade/archive install/erase & install) -- are these separate DVDs; what is the difference from retail and "other"; and can I purchase singular install DVDs vs full package. Caution, sometimes when they say Requires 10.5, they don't mention that it;s Intel only 10.5
AllGray Leopard/10.5 Discs are Machine specific & Intel only.

* Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
minimum system requirements
* 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
* DVD drive for installation
* 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
Classic/OS9 Apps no longer supported.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

Great advice! I must check further regarding Android "File Transfer" application requirement (Intel vs PCC). I have already downloaded the free "File Transfer" app; however, it does not work with current Mac operating status. The "Leopard" upgrade, however, may still be valuable as my web page often reminds me that my plugins are out of date -- maybe Leopard 10.5 would help that issue... Your thoughts?
I'd love to check the PPC/Leopord thing for you, but besides my Macs dying left & right, I was broke into & lost much of my OSX installs & equipment.
