OK, I love my Mac but with Windows I was able to simply create shortcut icons for the desktop that took me (or my kids) directly to a website. I cannot figure out how to do this on my Mac! Help

Drag the little icon for that website in your browser's address bar or the site's address in plain text to the desktop. For instance, if you wanted to do that for this thread, you'd either find the little Apple logo or drag https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4106591?tstart=0 to the desktop.
