Q: Aperture Crashing After Update

Hi there,

I am not sure exactly when, but a month or two ago I approved an Aperture update. After doing this, I started having a lot of beach ball/crashing problems while making adjustments to photos (skin smoothing, blur--these kids of adjustments). Sometimes just Aperture does a forced close and sometimes the complete system freezes and I have to shutdown/restart the entire computer.

I am new to the Mac world and only so savvy on a computer in general. I have read a lot of the discussions about Aperture crashing and problems, but none of them seem to fit exactly right and a lot of them have solutions that I do not fully understand. Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this problem? Can they be explained in layman terms? I would greatly appreciate it.

What kind of information do you need from me...and how can I find it for you? I see the crash reports a lot, is the text copy/paste-able into the forums here?

Okay, so the download completed, but when I tried to open it, it says this:

"The version of Aperture installed on this Mac must be updated through the Mac App Store. Check the Mac App Store to see if an update is available."

So then when I go to the MAS it tells me that in order to update I have to have operating system 10.7.4 or later, but I currently have Lion 10.6.8.

Would upgrading to Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard solve this issue so that I can then update Aperture?

I am hearing you Dah-Veed, but I am not sure exactly where even the apple menu is when you say that. I will look and see if I can find more of the computer specs. I do know I am running Lion, that I bought the computer new last July and that Aperture is troublesome.

Snow leopard is an older OS than Lion.

OK, updating. I see that you are running a contradiction, there is no Lion 10.6.8. Lion is 10.7. You have Snow Leopard 10.6.8. But, you can successfully update directly to Mountain Lion if you wait a bit longer without spending $30 to upgrade to Lion. If money is no object and you really need to update Aperture, then upgrade to Lion now.

The Apple menu is in the upper left corner of your menubar.

This tells us that you have a Mid 2011 21.5" iMac with 4 GB of RAM.

Oh, I am really sorry! Please don't bang your head on the table if I am starting to drive you crazy. I forgot it was called Mountain Lion.

How do I find Mountain Lion? Is that in the MAS? Do I need to go to the Apple store? Do I just click, download and voila it is there and ready?

This is my first Mac ever and so far I have only bought a couple of apps from the app store, but I have not downloaded a new OS.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, by the way!

Mountain Lion is not out yet. It will be likely later this month.

    These are the most recent versions of OS X in order;

    Leopard 10.5

    Snow Leopard 10.6

    Lion 10.7

    Mountain Lion will be 10.8.

Please don't bang your head on the table if I am starting to drive you crazy.

You have a way to go to catch up to my sister!

Lion 10.7.4 is what you can get from the Mac App Store right now and that is the minimum that you need to have installed to update Aperture to 3.3.1. It is US$29.99 + sales tax.

Mountain Lion should be out in a week or two and will be US$19.99 + sales tax. You can go directly to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard and skip Lion all together.

Sorry again, okay, we were so confused, but it's making sense now. We have Snow Leopard, not Lion. We are at 10.6.8. Lion came out immediately after we bought the computer and we decided not to change to Lion because I was just learning Snow Leopard and did not want to start over.

I found Lion in the app store. I will load that, then add Aperture's upgrade and hopefully all will be fixed. Thank you for all of your time.

    Yes, I think so.

With PCs you can buy a Windows version and then use it for several years without upgrades.

Lion just came out last July and now Mountain Lion is coming out almost exactly one year later. I see you are a long time Mac user---is it better to just plan on doing the yearly OS upgrades---in your opinion, Dah-veed?

When you buy and download Lion, you will get the Lion installer app. It will open itself and offer to install Lion. You may install Lion immediately or close the installer and install it later. You will find the installer in the Apps folder. The installer self deletes after it installs Lion, so if you think that you want a copy of the installer, copy it before running it. Otherwise you will have to download it again in the future if you want it. It is almost 4 GB to download.

A new OS a year is new this year with Apple. It used to be about every two years. Years back it was a bit longer. We got the original version of OS X in 2001 it has taken about 11 years to go from 10.0 to 10.8.

Yes, if you intend to stay up to date I would plan to update within a few months of a new release. I seed test for Apple, so I have been running the newest OS X for almost a year and helping to get the bugs out for the public release. I like it.

Have you done any of the steps listed in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics (apart from moving the preference files)?

Have you tried making a new empty library and seeing if Aperture will run with that? You should also make a new user, log in as that user and run Aperture and see if the problems go away or change.

Upgrading while you have  an issue with the current library while it might fix the situation is just as likely to cause more problems.  If you do follow this advice I would strongly recommend you have a backup of your library before doing the upgrade.

    regards
