Q: where are my contacts?

I'm new to my Mac Air and after setting up my email accounts I don't seem to have any contacts unless I hand type them in...can I import them from my old laptop?

If your "old laptop" a Mac.  If so, you should sign up for iCloud (free).  You would sync your user data (such as contacts) to iCloud using your previous Mac, with an Apple ID log in.  Then, by logging onto the same iCloud account (Apple ID), your new MacBook Air would sync to your iCloud account.

There is also Migration Assistant, which will bring over user data from an old Mac to a new Mac. It should have run automatically during the initial startup.  But if you did not use it then (which is actually a smart move to make sure your MacBook Air is running normally before migrating all of stuff into it), you can run it at any time from the Applications/Utilities/ folder.

If your old laptop is Windows, you can try using Windows Migration Assistant
