I selected by date, ascending, and on my iPhone there are some in random order in the libray.
I am NOT using photo stream

Technically, this could be an issue generating from iPhoto. I'm having the same problem. I have photos sorted by date (descending order) in iPhoto for Mac. In the past, iPhone would mirror how I had photos sorted in iPhoto once synced. Now, photos seem to show in random order on the iPhone and there appears to be no way to change it. Not sure if it has to do with the latest iPhoto or iPhone update. Currently using iPhoto '11 (version 9.4.2) and iPhone iOS version 6.1.
I do not know either but it is so frustrating. Maybe an AAPL engineer will chime in here. Is it a known issue that they will correct in an upcoming iOs or iPhoto update?
Very, very frustrating. Getting tired of running into all of these things that appear to be broken on the iPhone yet never needed to be fixed in the first place!
Seems like over the past few "upgrades" they have taken small steps forward, and a BIG step back.

I have read many of your posts and am wondering if you could address my issue of not having original dates on pictures, posted here
I have had a lot of issues with my iPhoto program. After many trips to the Genius Bar and numerous hours with phone techs, I am now rebuilding my library, starting with a backup of it from before the corruption. When I "get info" of a picture, I notice the original date the picture was taken (most important for me), is not there or is wrong. When I check package contents of my iPhoto library, the originals show up, but most (not all) of the dates are wrong. Can anyone tell me how or where I might find the original dates?
