Ipod nano 5th generation dark screen
I accidently washed my ipod nano and did the rice thing. It turns on and plays my music but the screen is now dark so it is hard to read the menu. What is wrong? What can I do to fix this?

It sounds like the Nano's LCD display backlight has burned out or was fried as a result of the contact with moisture. Before assuming it's a hardware issue, work through each of the 5 R's covered in this link to rule out any possibility of a software issue.

If no luck, you'll need to have your iPod either serviced or replaced by Apple or a third party company.

It sounds like the backlight for the LCD display is no longer working (or maybe set to be OFF).
The things I list below are what I'd suggest normally, but since this problem coincided with the iPod getting wet, it is more likely to be a hardware problem.
Try doing a Reset (to "reboot" the iPod)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
You can check the iPod's Settings screen to make sure the backlight setting did not accidentally get set to be OFF. On my nano, that setting is under Settings -> General -> Backlight.
You can also go to the Settings screen and select Reset Settings. This will reset all current settings to their default settings.
If the iPod is recognized by iTunes when connected to the computer, you can try doing a Restore. This is done by selecting the iPod in the iTunes sidebar under DEVICES, and going to the Summary tab (over to the right). This will erase the iPod, reinstall the latest software, and set it to default settings.
You could let it sit in a warm place for a while longer. Maybe all the moisture is not gone...
Apple won't actually fix the iPod, but instead will do an out of warranty replacement for the costs specified on this page.

Thanks I tried doing all of the that but I do think its a hardware problem because it works fine except it is dark. Do you have an estimate on how much it will be to fix it because I am trying to find an apple store closeby and want to know know if its worth repairing or buying a new one
No problem. There are also several third party service centers out there will actually replace the damaged part for a little less, but it's up to you as to whether or not that would be the wiser choice.

The Apple support site lists a flat fee of $79 for repair of a Nano 5th gen. It's a novel iPod with more features than any other (incl. a movie camera!), but you'd have trouble getting $80 for it. Probably not worth fixing. Just use it like an extra storage stick with the added benefit of organizing and playing your music files.
The question is, then, if any of the heavily advertized repair sites on the internet will actually repair it and for less than the $80 Apple is asking for. Replacing that backlight is an extremely delicate process, so I understand Apple's unwillingness to fool with it if they have a back-stock of old iPod Nano 5's.
ok thanks you helped out a lot!
Thanks, i looked up online and the reviews and some said they never got their ipods back so im not sure if I want to risk losing my ipod. I dont know any reliable third party services.
They didn't get their iPod back from Apple? I haven't heard of such a thing... ???

no not apple haha. I have heard from other companies saying that they fix ipods and then not giving them back at least thats what most places i reviewed complained about
Just make sure to do your research then if you do decide to go the third party route. Either way it might just be cheaper to go the Apple route.
