Screen stuck at 640 x 480 resolution in Bootcamp with Windows 7

I just bought a 2012 Macbook Pro (Non-Retina Display) ... Does anyone have a problem with the resolution being stuck at 640 x 480 when a projector is connected via thunderbolt in Windows 7? I noticed that this was a problem a while back with the 2010 Macbook Pros with nvidia cards but was resolved with bootcamp 3.2 update. I am using Mac OS X Lion with Bootcamp 4.0.4.

Any answers would be appreciated...

Thanks..

Is the resolution fine otherwise? if not, find the graphic driver in the Boot Camp package and reinstall.

I would try update the graphic driver with newest from Nvidia, I assume yours has 650M.

It use to be next to impossible until last fall to update gpu drivers, gotten a lot better and less trouble.

Yeah, I did try going to nvidia's website, it advised me to go to the manufacturer's website to download the latest driver. I also went to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to find a hacked driver and it still wouldn't install. The installers both say my system is not compatible. Windows 7 Runs flawlessly in bootcamp, the resolution is perfect until it is connected to a projector and then the resolution change to 640 x 480 automatically. The screen resolution choices are disabled. I think Apple is going to have to release an update for bootcamp 4.0.4. I have a 2011 17inch Macbook Pro (AMD HD Radeon 6770m) and it does not have this problem when connected to a projector.

Forget what Nvidia said, just find the Windows driver for your model graphic card.

Auto detect does not work and don't select "Boot Camp" either.

The MacBook Pro Retina - Nvidia 650M - may need to just reinstall only that driver:

To reinstall a specific driver:

  1. 1 Insert your Mac OS X installation disc.
  2. 2 Quit AutoRun if it opens.
  3. 3 Using Windows Explorer, locate the driver that you want to reinstall.
  4. 4 Open the driver to start the installation.

I did manage to make the trackpad work. You need to install trackpad++

(http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4967-trackpad-control-module.html), it will enable the trackpad driver on boot camp. After you install the trackpad++, trackpad++ will complain something. ingnore it. You should be able to enable trackpad. And you can now even uninstall the trackpad++, the trackpad will sill work.

brightness, what graphics card are you using? It might be due to the auto adjusting brightness running there. You can go to your power options, edit the one you are using (Change plan settings >> Change advanced power settings) and look for Batteries >> Enable adaptive brightness and disable the one you are using. After that, the scrollbar for adjusting brightness in power options should work again.

AUDIO FIX

I experienced zero audio output from my iMac's speakers with limited output using headphones.

  1. Insert the installer disc for Snow Leopard while in Windows

  2. Open the "Bootcamp" folder

  3. Open the "Drivers" folder

  4. Open the "Cirrus" folder

  5. Double click and install the "CirrusAudioVista64" driver (or what is applicable to your system)

  6. Restart your computer

If these steps don't work, uninstall the current driver by going to your Device Manager in Control Panel.

Download the Macbook Pro Cirrus Logic CS4206A Driver from our server.

Again, do not worry if you are running Windows 7 or Vista. (As a request, please do not hotlink this file anywhere else or our server will automatically remove the file from server.)

UPDATE: For newer Macbooks, you might need a newer driver which is availble here

@matfromchicago, unfortunately I am unable to resolve this issue. I spoke to an apple technician and he was not able to help me. He told me it was Microsoft and not Apple. The trouble ticket was esculated to a senior analyst and he said it was the projector. The funny thing is the projector connects to my 2011 Macbook Pro just fine. The projector is capable of HD resolutions so I doubt that 640 x 480 is all that it could go up to. I was able to install a hacked driver from www.laptopvideo2go.com and change the resolution but 640 x 480 was the highest it could go. In my opinion, it is a driver problem with the nVidia GT 650m card or Apple needs to release an updated drivers for bootcamp. On another note, I upgraded to Mountain Lion and I noticed the resolution changed automaticaly to 640 x 480 when connected to a projector. I had to adjust the settings to make the resolution higher. I noticed the setting was set to "best for color display". Apple does claim that on the Mac side, it's able to project HD resolutions, I did find that to be true, however I personally think that Apple might have locked the modes incase any other software (besides Mac OS) trys to access the video card.

I have suffered for years with this issue having had an early MBP 2006 with ATI drivers.

In a nutshell when you are in Bootcamp the signal sent to the projector to exchange information about what it is capable not does not arrive.

The answer is to get an ACTIVE thunderbolt to DVI or VGA connector

This is an example but I HAVE NOT TRIED IT AND DO NOT GUARANTEE IT WILL WORK

This link might help too.

Basically it is not a video driver problem but a cable issue.

Good luck

Very difficult concept and hard to break people of saying things that are just contrary, even Alice would have unlearned what had to be learned as how can something run that isn't a thing?

You have to run as fast as you can just to stay where you are, and if you want to get somewhere, well, then you'll have to run at least twice as fast as that!
