I see from Tom's post on another question that I set it in user preferences. Thing is I've imported them all, renamed them for ease...... can I now change the duration for all of them?
If you are going to place the stills in a determined order on the timeline, go ahead and do that with the incorrect duration.
Once you have all your still clips placed, select all the still clips, and once they are all selected Control-click on any one of the selected clips and from the drop-down menu choose "Duration".
Set the Duration to the duration you want, and click OK.
Now each still clip should have the same new duration.

Simply select all stills and press ctrl-d. Then put in your desired duration.
