Rebooting isn't working for me. I was going to use Time Machine to migrate my account my new powerbook, but there wasn't enough space. So I was forced to turn off the power book (since Migration Assistant provides no way to cancel an ongoing operation). Now Time Machine thinks it's sparse bundle is constantly in use. I've restarted twice. Can't find any option in the Airport Utility to reboot time machine or boot off non-existent users. OSX Mountain Lion.

I was having this same problem. I had turned on an old Macbook briefly and then turned it off. It must have been doing a backup at the time, because my newer Macbook Air could no longer do a backup because the sparsebundle was in use.

I followed crandyhill's suggestion above, and that solved everything. I had to open Airport Utility 5.6, click on manual setup, click on the disks tab, click on disconnect all users.

That solved the problem, and now my Air is doing regular backups again.
