Since I have my doubts about my 2008 being fixed properly I've been looking at the latest offerings.
The top 15" non-retina shows only 8gb of RAM and no 16gb option? I've read you can no longer self install a memory upgrade on these newer MBPs.
Is this true, 8gb max?
You can upgrade ram on the non retina, its the retina thats not upgradable. Pretty sure you can order the non retina with 16gigs too
The menu doesn't show a 16gb option for either 15" non-retina.
Order it with the standard 4GBs and then upgrade it yourself. Much cheaper and you will end up with a better warranty on the RAM.
All 2011 and current 2012 MBPs can take 16GBs of RAM.
Once you select the 15 inch you want, it gives you options to configure it. Upgrading to 16gigs is one of the options.

Not on the standard models. 8GBs is the max as an option. In fact on the higher end standard model there is no RAM option at all. It comes with 8GBs.
Only on the Retina models is that an option and only on a few of them, Not All.

The MBP non-retina is the same as the older unibodies, I have both. It can take 2x4GB.
I suppose it can take 2x8GB but that is not documented and very expensive, so I just changed the 2x2GB for 2x4GB (and wait a little longer for the 2x8GB. Instead I also built in the Samsung 830SSD 256GB, as easy as always (by cloning the HDD first).

Thanx, wasn't sure about user upgrades on the non-retina MBP. The lack of 16gb option when doing a CTO kinda "threw me" since it is an option on the retina.
FYI the retina uses a lot more Ram for itself....

I don't think that is correct. Both Retina and standard MBP use the same OS. Thus use the same amount of RAM.
The reason the Retina has an option for 16GBs of RAM is because once it is built the RAM can never be upgrade. On the NON Retina models, the standard models, the RAM can be upgraded at any time.
